Mass Effect 2 Announcement and Speculation

This announcement actually caught me off guard. I was expecting EA/BioWare to hold off announcing Mass Effect 2 till one of their own events or E3. We’ve known that stuff was going to be discussed at GDC for a while now but I figured it would be very basic and non-specific stuff since we already knew the game was coming around (it was announced as a trilogy).

BioWare to Discuss Mass Effect 2 at GDC

Jan 8 2009 – BioWare has announced that it will showcase Mass Effect 2, the sequel to its critically-acclaimed RPG, at this year’s upcoming Game Developers Conference. The developer revealed on the gaming event’s web site that it would discuss what it learned from the first game’s level design and how the second game would improve upon the formula.

GDC will once again take place at San Francisco’s Moscone Center. This year’s event will be held from March 23 – 27. BioWare Project Manager Corey Andruko and BioWare Lead Technical Designer Dusty Everman will lead the 60-minute lecture. The session’s official description is posted below:

Session Description
This session examines the BioWare Mass Effect team’s new level-creation process, which is focused on maximizing iteration for quality while minimizing rework and cost. This approach to building levels strives to integrate the Design, Art, and Production teams such that the highest-risk level-creation issues are addressed early in the development cycle. Lessons learned from Mass Effect lead to a detailed description of the new level-creation process, and graphical examples of a level illustrate its progression through the necessary phases. The discussion also examines how BioWare is currently implementing this process using elements of Scrum and Lean Development.

Takeaway
Attendees will: – Gain insight into some of the major issues the development team encountered while building Mass Effect at BioWare; – Get a detailed look at the Mass Effect team’s new approach to creating levels while avoiding these issues; – Find out how this new process is working for the Mass Effect team; – Learn about new pitfalls the team discovered that can potentially be avoided on future game projects.

Intended Audience and Prerequisites
This lecture is intended for producers, designers, or any game developer involved in planning, specification, or content creation for game levels. An understanding of modern video game development workflows is recommended.”

Those that can’t attend the annual event can stay tuned to IGN for upcoming coverage.

Microsoft Fleecing Xbox Live Customers?

Last night during the Spike TV Video Game Awards, it was announced that Gears 2 was receiving it’s first map pack, titled the Combustion Map Pack and it would be released later that night, 12 am PST to be exact. The fact that there was a map pack didn’t really surprise anyone because a mere 10 days after the release, the first screenshots of a map titled “Imulsion” appeared on Joystiq. Now, 5 weeks later, Microsoft just released three new maps for the game in the pack for $10. While that’s the regular price point for map packs, this time around it seems like Microsoft might be going for a money grab… (more…)

First Impressions: Banjo-Kazooie: Nuts And Bolts

Alright straight from the get go, I am a fan of the franchise, so there may be a little bias here. The second thing I must note is that the demo of BK:N&B on XBL doesn’t do the game justice. I thought the demo was fairly good while waiting to play the full version game, but to be completely honest, compared to the full version the demo sucks and doesn’t pay the title adequate homage.

VG Review: Mirror’s Edge [Xbox 360]

It’s hard to look at a new IP and a least not give it a chance. So when it was announced, like everyone else Mirror’s Edge immediately caught my attention. Stressing an unusual gameplay mechanic with stunning eye-candy could catch anyones attention. When the demo released on October 31, it turned into a whole new ballgame. Some of my friends lost interest, while I immediately soaked it all up and became an insomniac pro at the time trials, losing sleep just to gain those six stars (to increase your skill level) by shaving off fractions of a second by finding alternate paths through the courses.

Fallout 3 Impressions

So, it’s been a week since I’ve picked up Fallout 3 and I’m still not close to beating the main story of this game, hence this being an “Impressions” article rather than a “Review.” That being said, I don’t think my opinions will change too much in the time between the two are finished so this could pretty much double as a review. But I digress… (more…)

VG REVIEW: Saints Row 2 [Xbox 360]

Like most accounts of this title start of I will be no different in saying that this is by no means a Grand Theft Auto diversion or a GTA killer, instead it should be viewed as an alternative. But it still is worth picking up, or at least playing. I had doubts about the game but gave it a try. While I wasn’t overly impressed by it the title was still fun to say the least. All the great elements of the first game were there but with some small tweaks, minor adjustments, or a more added content. I liked how the layout of the city remained relatively unchanged, instead just the culture and feel of Stilwater changed a bit.

Campaign Ads Reach Video Games

Sorry, thought this would be interesting, instead of writing, I’ll just post the article. Thought this was interesting regardless of policy. I believe the article says ads will run until November 3, and vary from state to state which is interesting, I wonder how they are able to distinguish state from state via the IPS. Directly following read more link is the Fox Report in its entirety. (more…)

Fable 2: First Impressions

Well, as frequent readers should have heard I went out to pick this title up yesterday. So after playing the first few hours of the game, here’s what I think. Awesome, just pure awesome. Thus far I think everything Peter Molyneaux has talked about, I have seen in the game. Just a quick breakdown. (more…)
